I love this article and the CouchSurfing.com concept in general. This is exactly how I backpacked from Mosccow to Manchester, and back again: staying on the couches of a wide network of friends of friends of friends...and even a fair share of generous hosts who I "met" online in music forums and the like. And altogether positive experience that I'd encourage anyone to try.

It's arguably better for the environment and for our communities when people buy from (small, local, organic) farmers markets, co-ops, CSA's, etc. I don't wish Whole Foods any ill will, but small is beautiful, as they say.
