New carbon for old

response to  GOOD magazine's post Project 010: Less Power to the People

So what happens to the old fridges? How much carbon does it take to dismantle a fridge? Or does that just go to the landfill - or the side of the road?
How much carbon does it take to make a new fridge? Do we save that much over it's life, plus of course the carbon cost of dismantling the old.
Similarly it has been suggested that it is better for the environment to purchase an old car than a new hybrid.
